In honor of edTPA submission week, I created this screencast to feature a tool I used to reduce the file size of videos that I created. This procedure is useful when quality of the video is not important and uploading files quickly, storing them in a limited drive space, or just sending the files in an email is a priority! The tool (Clipchamp.com) is free to use for up to 5 videos and is completely web-based (meaning no download necessary and it is usable on district/school computers)!

In his "Redefining Teachers with a 21st Century Education ‘Story’", author Thom Markham attempts to capture the current challenge teachers face in today's education system. In order to turn teachers away from the "undertone of resignation, cynicism, or even learned helplessness" that sometimes heavily impacts teaching environments, Markham describes a concise and important list of changes to teacher dispositions that must occur to meet the expectations of "the most enviable, challenging, fulfilling role possible in the 21st century." While author Markham reiterates many of the same pieces of advice that echo through so many of the papers we've read and videos we've watched in the credential program of CSUSM, what differs is his strict adherence to feelings positivity and excitement for the current teachers of the world, despite the immense difficulties of the challenges that face us.
We are addressing what jobs used to look for. Today, companies (like Google) are looking for much more in potential employees. Identified by Laszlo Bock (the senior vice president of people operations for Google) in Friedman's "How to Get a Job at Google" (Fiedman, 2014), "there are five hiring attributes" Google looks for during the hiring process. These attributes are learning ability, humility, collaboration, adaptability, and emergent leadership. The first and last of these I would like to focus on here. While Bock is careful to asterisk this statement by stating that "traditional metrics" are still a concrete measure of a person's hire-ability and projected success, he makes one thing clear: "the world only cares about - and pays off on - what you can do with what you know ."
We can all agree that the best way to teach behavior to students is to model that behavior, so it is clear that modeling how to stay motivated is the challenge we as teachers face to push our students to greatness. However, what isn't clear are the steps to staying motivated. In his video "Be Unrealistic and the Best of Will Smith - #MentorMeWill", Evan Carmichael shares the wisdom of actor Will Smith regarding motivation and work ethic.
One of the most popular social media applications among high school students is Instagram, matched in popularity only by Snapchat. Talking to students about technology, it's somewhat social suicide to mention that you are a frequent Twitter user. Among this generation, the label "frequent Facebook user" doesn't even exist. In his video "Instagram i love you", Casey Neistat, an avid Instagram user, walks viewers through both his love for the application and the unspoken rules that have evolved since its creation. That's right, Instagram has developed secret laws like seating arrangements at the school lunch tables. Nevertheless, the popularity of Instagram alludes to the learning styles of the generation we are teaching. This generation is a generation of performers. Everyone demands their own method of expression and everyone has plenty to share. While most might use this as evidence for "why millennials are the worst generation ever" (an argument I will speak out against any day, any time) I see this as an opportunity for teachers to create learning while students create expression. I call it "teaching with Instagram-able Moments".
The parents have the normal wishes for their child: to eventually graduate at the top of their class and go to the best college. Their goals for their daughter may be rooted in good intentions, they do not reflect a goal of lifelong learning for her and while I have the power to increase her exposure to thinking about her thinking, I don't have the power to help their parents learn about her learning.
